Building the Future through Training

Becon Construction, a subsidiary of Bechtel Corporation, works diligently to provide craft training to improve current skills or help in the development of new skills.  Becon and its partners worked together to secure hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants to help fund new training programs or expand existing ones.

Becon is one of the founding contributors to the establishment of the National Center for Construction and Research (NCCER) not only through funding, but also by providing skilled experts to help in the development of training of testing materials used throughout the industry.

As part of its partnership with Lamar State College-Port Arthur (LSC-PA), Becon supplied instructors who were journeymen in their craft for several of the courses.  Those instructors also worked to help the college develop construction career development plans for local students.  Many of those students graduating from basic construction training, and others completing more advanced skills training, have earned jobs in the vibrant construction industry in Port Arthur.

Becon is committed to the Port Arthur community and the people who call it home.  That also includes efforts targeted toward attracting Hispanics and women into construction.  The company also actively recruits military personnel and is a major supporter of the Hire Vets First initiative.

Becon prides itself on providing a clean workplace where safety is the guiding value, and employees are treated with dignity and respect and receive competitive wages and benefits.

In 2007 Becon was chosen as the Texas Workforce Commission’s (TWC) 2007 “Texas Employer of the Year” for its efforts in construction training, recruiting and employment in southeast Texas.  If you are interested in training opportunities, please call the Becon Employment and Community Center at (409)722-3308.

Another community organization that the general contractors have established a lasting partnership is the Golden Triangle Empowerment Center (GTEC).  GTEC is a unique workforce job and life skills training program designed to help people who haven’t been afforded the opportunity to get the necessary work skills to become successful workers in the industrial arena.  GTEC offers a 10 week NCCER core curriculum course that gives individuals a solid start in construction.  GTEC is located at 617 Procter Street, Port Arthur, TX 77642, (409) 982-0522.

Anyone seeking employment on the project must pass a drug test and criminal background check.
