Motiva Port Arthur Refinery Expansion Project

 A Historic Project

Motiva Enterprises LLC is building an epic expansion at its Port Arthur Refinery.

This expansion will increase current capacity to 600,000 barrels per day in 2012, making it the largest refinery in the U.S. and one of the top 10 in the world.

Port Arthur is primed to become America's refinery leader. Its strategic Gulf Coast location with ready access to waterborne crude oil and major product pipelines make it the ideal place for such an expansion.

 Who We Are

Motiva Enterprises LLC was formed in 1998 as a joint venture between affiliates of Shell and Saudi Aramco. Our operations, located primarily in the eastern and southern U.S., include three refineries with a combined capacity of 740,000 barrels per day, and approximately 7,700 Shell-branded gasoline stations.

We have contracted with a joint venture of Bechtel Corporation and Jacobs Engineering Group to design and construct this refinery expansion. Becon Construction is the principal construction contractor on the project.

 What We're Doing

We began site preparation in 2006, and started construction in the fall of 2007.

During this expansion, the Port Arthur Refinery will still operate at its current capacity of 275,000 barrels per day. At peak construction, we expect between 5,000-6,000 people on the expansion site.

 Community Benefits

We will continue to be an active partner in the community, and strive to improve the quality of life of our neighbors.

The Motiva Port Arthur Refinery Expansion Project is expected to generate more than $17 billion in new economic development in Port Arthur, Jefferson County, and the Golden Triangle of Southeast Texas.

Through 2008, Motiva Port Arthur Refinery spent more than $126 million in the local community via:

  • Goods and services
  • Payroll for nearly 900 employees
  • Charitable donations
  • Property taxes

 Interesting Facts

A glimpse of the amount of materials we will use to build this expansion:

  • 61,175 piles for a total of 4,500,000 linear feet based on an average length of 75' (852 miles) -- wider than Texas or nine times the distance from Port Arthur to Houston,
  • 285,000 cubic yards of concrete -- enough to make a towering cube 170 feet high if you poured it on a football field
  • 3,100,000 linear feet of pipe (600 miles)
  • 5,600,000 linear feet of cable -- enough to stretch from Port Arthur to the south edge of Chicago
  • Almost 2000 pieces of equipment -- ranging from a crude colum 284 feet high and 30-foot diameter weighing two million pounds empty, to small vessels three feet high and two feet in diameter
  • 78,000 tons of structural steel (156,000,000 pounds)
